Satellite images show green ice in Antarctica: science explains it
The European Union Copernicus Sentinel satellites make it possible to track the dynamics of marine ecosystems from space.

In early March, an image captured by one of the Copernicus program satellites from the European Space Agency (ESA) drew attention after revealing that Antarctic ice is changing color, displaying an unusual green hue.
Experts are already examining and analyzing these images captured by the Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites. According to information published on the official Copernicus program website, this phenomenon is due to a significant increase in phytoplankton. These organisms, although microscopic, perform photosynthesis, which produces the large greenish patches visible in the water.

A balanced marine ecosystem
It is important to note that the presence of these microorganisms, while it may seem concerning at first, is actually a positive sign, as it indicates that the marine ecosystem is in balance. This phenomenon typically occurs in sync with the seasonal cycle of the Southern Ocean.
As the polar night ends and sunlight begins to return, phytoplankton grows while the ice starts to melt. This process releases nutrients that promote the growth of these microorganisms and lead to visible changes in the color of the ocean.
In other words, the images captured by the Sentinel satellites are showing phytoplankton blooms that create large visible areas, making it possible to observe ocean currents that spread these microorganisms.
With this view from space, scientists can monitor the behavior of these phenomena anywhere on the planet, gaining deeper insight into marine ecosystems in key regions.
