Saudi Arabia’s ‘desert fish’ emerges from the dunes

The image was shot from the drone of photographer Al Enazi, who identified the rock formation while surveying the desert.

One of the most striking images of recent months has been shot in a Saudi desert. It may sound like a science fiction story, but photographer Al Enazi has captured one of the most curious snapshots of the year.

The photograph, entitled ‘Desert Fish’, shows a huge rock rising from the sands in Saudi Arabia in the shape of a shark’s fin.

The image was taken thanks to a drone owned by the photographer during his assignment to record the archaeological treasures of Al-Ula, an area of Saudi Arabia characterized by its ancient structures. Enazi, speaking to CNN, said that the mountain appeared in front of him “with a shape that suggested that of a fish.”

He was not the first person to find this rock but the drone technology he was using gave him a fresh perspective on the natural wonder. From his aerial perspective, its curious shape was more noticeable.

“A photographer’s eye sees what people don’t appreciate,” he explained

Desert Fish

Enazi is currently working to create content for his own YouTube channel documenting the Al-Ula region and its unique landscape. The areas covers nearly 9,000 square miles and boasts some of the world’s most spell-binding desert scenes.

He chose the name for this image due to the shape of the spectacular rock, which mimics the fins of a fish, or even shark emerging from the depths of the ocean.

The rock has not yet been studied in great detail but there are already a number of whimsical explanations for the eye-catching formation circulating online. One of the most notable, and perhaps least believable, is that the entire structure is the fossilized remains of a real fish. However Enazi was quick to dismiss this fanciful explanation.

“Some have mentioned that it is a real fish that was fossilized millions of years ago, but that’s not the case,” the photographer claimed. “It is sandstone formed by many factors.”
