Science seems to have an answer for everything, and now it’s helping explain when our bodies actually begin to age. We’ve all met people who are young in years but seem older in spirit, and others who, despite their age, still think and move like they’re decades younger. That’s exactly what scientists at Stanford University set out to understand.

Two key turning points related to aging

Their research points to two key turning points: age 44 and age 60.

At 44, the body starts to show the first signs of biological slowdown - hormonal shifts, gut changes, and physical aches that suggest we’ve reached the midpoint of life and that the body is, as people like to say, “showing its wear.”

At 60, a different kind of transformation begins. Outwardly, it shows through wrinkles and visible aging, while inside, cellular deterioration accelerates. That’s when chronic diseases often appear — from cancer and cardiovascular issues to cognitive decline.

The Stanford team analyzed more than 3,000 proteins in blood samples from over 4,200 people between the ages of 18 and 95. The study, published in Nature Medicine, concluded that aging doesn’t happen in a straight line but in distinct biological “jumps.”

How to stay healthy as you get older

And while some factors are beyond our control, healthy habits clearly make a difference: eating well, resting enough, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and staying physically active help keep the body strong. Mental well-being also plays a major role - keeping an active, positive, and balanced mind, and managing stress, anxiety, or sadness, can all contribute to a longer, healthier life.
