Scientists explain why squirrels are attracted to vapes and reveal a major health problem

The sweet aromas of electronic cigarettes are confusing urban wildlife and exposing it to toxic substances.

Update:

A video recorded in South London has alarmed wildlife experts after showing a squirrel handling and chewing on a disposable vape. While the clip quickly went viral and many viewers treated it as a joke, scientists warn the situation is far more serious than “animals vaping.”

According to specialists, squirrels aren’t seeking nicotine or trying to use the device. Instead, they’re drawn to the sweet, fruity scents found in many e‑liquids. These artificial aromas can easily attract animals that rely heavily on smell to locate food.

Craig Shuttleworth, a squirrel expert at Bangor University in Wales, explained that “it would make sense that an e‑cigarette would be more attractive than a regular tobacco product that doesn’t have fruit flavors.” In urban environments where natural food sources are limited, animals may mistake these discarded devices for something edible.

Disposable vapes pose a growing threat to urban wildlife

What animals don’t know is that interacting with these devices exposes them to multiple dangers:

  • Nicotine, a substance wildlife is not equipped to handle
  • Microplastics and small metal components that can be swallowed when they chew the device
  • Chemical compounds in vape liquids that are foreign to their diet and potentially toxic

Animal‑protection groups warn that the issue extends far beyond squirrels. There have been documented cases of birds dying after ingesting vapes, as well as hundreds of poisonings in pets, especially dogs. These incidents point to a much broader ecological impact from e‑cigarette waste.

A symptom of a bigger problem: tech trash in natural spaces

Experts agree that this trend highlights a troubling reality: the rapid accumulation of tech waste in both natural and urban environments. Viral videos may make the situation seem amusing, but researchers stress that improper disposal of these devices is creating a new kind of pollution — one that wildlife is already interacting with in unpredictable and harmful ways.

As disposable vapes continue to pile up in parks, streets, and green spaces, they’re becoming part of the everyday landscape for animals. And the long‑term consequences, scientists warn, are still largely unknown.
