Scientists still can’t figure out what made Earth’s molten core reverse direction in 2010
Far below our feet a dynamic process takes place that helps make life on our planet possible. In the Earth’s core, an ocean of iron-rich fluid churns producing a magnetic field that shields our planet from charged particles the Sun is constantly pumping out. Additionally, it prevents the powerful solar winds coming from the Sun from stripping away Earth’s atmosphere.
While we know that the magnetic field can fluctuate, the magnetic north is currently moving rapidly towards the Arctic coast of Russia and periodically reverses polarity, scientists observed something out of the ordinary in 2010. Over 1,300 miles below the Pacific Ocean the flow of the outer core changed direction.
Scientists puzzled by sudden change in Earth’s core
Using data collected between 1997 and 2025 from equipment on the ground and satellites, researchers observed that the weak westward flow of the outer core beneath the equatorial Pacific dramatically shifted to a strong eastward flow. They published their findings in the Journal of Studies of Earth’s Deep Interior.
“The large-scale flow reversal beneath the Pacific raises new questions about the behaviour of Earth’s deep interior. Scientists now want to understand whether the reversal represents a short-lived fluctuation, part of a repeating oscillation, or a new stable equilibrium for core circulation,” explained geoscientist Frederik Dahl Madsen of the University of Edinburgh and lead author, in a statement. “Continued monitoring will be essential to determine how the flow evolves over the coming years.”
Thanks to the highly sensitive magnetometers aboard the three ESA Swarm satellites, which were launched in 2013, scientists have been able to map Earth’s magnetic field with exceptional precision. Given that they provide continuous global coverage over a long duration, the measurements collected “allow researchers to follow changes in the geodynamo in near-realtime and improve models of Earth’s magnetic field evolution,” explained Anja Stromme, Swarm mission manager.
After the strength of the eastward peaked several years ago, researchers noted in their study that it appears that it is now weakening. This has raised the possibility that the flow change may be temporary or part of a longer natural cycle within the dynamics of the core.
“Earth’s core may be far more variable and complex than once believed,” said Elisabetta Iorfida, a Swarm mission scientist. “This study shows that regional changes can emerge rapidly within just a decade… [And it] raises intriguing questions about how Earth’s deepest layers are dynamically connected.”
