Sinéad O’Connor dies aged 56- 18 months after son’s tragic death
The acclaimed Dublin singer who rose to fame with hit single ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ in 1990 has died at the age of 56
Last night, it was reported that Sinead O’Connor, the acclaimed Dublin performer, passed away at 56 after years of battling mental health issues.
The news comes about a year after her son Shane, aged 17, tragically took his own life in January 2022, escaping from the hospital while on suicide watch.
At the time of her death, the musician, who changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat in 2018 after converting to Islam, was believed to be dividing her time between Co Roscommon, Ireland, and London.

O’Connor released ten studio albums throughout her career, and her song “Nothing Compares 2 U” was honored as the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.
O’Connor was awarded the inaugural Classic Irish Album earlier that year at the RTÉ Choice Music Awards. During the ceremony, she received a standing ovation after dedicating the award for her album “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” to “each and every member of Ireland’s refugee community.”
O’Connor was always brave, sharing her outspoken views on religion, sex, feminism, and war and consistently advocating on behalf of abused children.
As reports of O’Connor’s death broke, fans and stars took to social media to remember the iconic artist and pay tribute to her legacy and all the good she did in the world.
