The United States has various social assistance programs, one of the largest is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, formally known as food stamps.

Through this program, the government provides money to low-income families so that they can buy healthy, nutritious foods. The payment is issued on a monthly basis through an EBT debit card and the amount depends on the family’s economic situation, as well as the number of members that make up the household.

Each year, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agency responsible for overseeing SNAP adjusts the “maximum allotments, deductions, and income eligibility standards at the beginning of each federal fiscal year.”

Unlike the Social Security COLA, not all beneficiaries will see an increase in their benefits after the COLA is implemented.

SNAP payment increase: What amounts will be received in October

For much of 2023, the maximum amount to receive for an individual was $281. However, these updates recently increased on 1 October, rising three percent thanks to the application of a Cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).

Year after year, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) increases SNAP coupons to match monthly payments with current inflation. With this, the maximum to receive for an individual will go from $281 to $291. The maximums for all household sizes will also be adjusted and increased by three percent:

  • 1 member: $291 dollars
  • 2 members: $535
  • 3 members: $766
  • 4 members: $973
  • 5 members: $1,155
  • 6 members: $1,386
  • 7 members: $1,532
  • 8 members: $1,1751
  • Each additional member: +$219

Does any action have to be taken to see SNAP benefits increased?

If your benefit amount is to be adjusted after the COLA changes have been implemented, no actions need to be taken.
