Snow in California in August? Low-pressure system to bring winter-like conditions this week
A rare low-pressure system is set to bring winter-like weather, including the possibility of snowfall, this week, particularly affecting a specific area.
California is bracing for winter-like weather this week, with a low-pressure system poised to bring snow to the Sierra Nevada region. It marks the first time in over 20 years that snowfall is anticipated in August in these high-elevation areas.
The approaching cold front is expected to significantly alter the weather patterns across California, resulting in a dramatic drop in temperatures, around 10 to 15 degrees below the seasonal average.
“An unusually, early, cold storm, even for the High Sierra above 8000 feet. August snow has not occurred in these locations for at least 20 years,” NWS Hanford posted on X. “Although these are light amounts, motorists and hikers should be aware of this forecast.”
Snowfall is likely to occur from Friday night into Saturday morning, with the best chances in areas such as the Lake Tahoe Basin and Yosemite National Park.
Temperature will drop this weekend
As the cold front makes its way into the region, temperatures in Northern California are set to plummet. South Lake Tahoe, for instance, could be as low as 32 degrees. This stark contrast to the summer heat is likely to catch many residents and visitors off guard.
The impending weather changes may have significant implications for travel and outdoor activities. Motorists and hikers are advised to exercise caution due to potentially hazardous conditions.
While the storm is not expected to bring substantial moisture, its arrival offers a brief respite from the summer heat and may help mitigate wildfire risks temporarily.
