Another low pressure system is plowing its way across the nation, with the worst effects to hit from Texas to the Mid-Atlantic, dubbed Winter Storm Cora by the Weather Channel. The wintry weather system began delivering snow and ice to parts of Texas on Thursday creating treacherous conditions for travelers.

On Friday, the front will develop as it moves east dumping heavy snow from the mid-South to the Mid-Atlantic, but the impact of the system will be felt up to the Great Lakes over to New England. South of the main band of snow, potentially significant icing is expected which presents the possibility of power outages from downed power lines.

Areas that will be most affected by ice, snow and freezing temperatures

Snowfall should end Friday morning for the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. However, the wintry weather is already impacting areas as far east as the Carolinas and up to the Chicago metro area and west into the Central Plains. The heaviest snowfalls will be experienced in from eastern Oklahoma across Arkansas and Tennessee as well as northern Alabama and Mississippi into western North Carolina.

Little Rock could see up to 12 inches of snow and Nashville as much as 5 inches according to the Weather Channel.

South of the main snow band there is the potential for icing. Areas that will be affected stretch along I-40 from Dallas to central Arkansas where east of Texarkana a swath of potential icing extends south to Shreveport, Louisiana. Also portions of eastern Texas and western Louisiana along and south of I-20.

Cities like Birmingham, Atlanta and Columbia are in the bullseye currently for areas that will be impacted by the worst of the icing. Moderate to major impacts are expected across the Mid-South throughout the day on Friday.

Major impacts will be experienced in Little Rock and Memphis due to snow while in Atlanta icing, starting in the morning and continuing during the day, will make travel hazardous.

The ice and snow will move through the Carolinas throughout the day and overnight into the early hours of Saturday before the precipitation dissipates. However, travel could still be treacherous and unusually cold temperatures will be left in the wake of the storm.

One of the biggest concerns is power lines being downed as tree branches succumb to the weight of ice on them. This is especially concerning due to the extremely low temperatures that will be in the low 30s and below freezing in areas affected by the ice and snow.
