Social Security benefits are being sent out on Wednesday, March 11: here’s who gets a payment
In the U.S., the SSA is next week scheduled to send out benefits for March 2026 to millions of certain Social Security recipients.

Throughout the U.S., certain Social Security beneficiaries are next week due to receive their monthly payment for March 2026, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) kicks off this month’s three-Wednesdays distribution cycle.
On Wednesday, March 11, the agency is scheduled to issue benefits to a specific group of Americans who receive Social Security retirement, disability or survivor benefits.
The SSA’s three-Wednesdays payment cycle - explained:
Of the just over 70 million recipients of retirement, disability or survivor benefits in the U.S., most are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month.
A beneficiary’s allocated Wednesday is determined by the date of birth of the worker whose Social Security taxes have earned the benefits entitlement. If you claim benefits based on your own work record, your date of birth is used. If you claim based on the record of a family member - such as a spouse or parent - the relative’s birthday applies.
So who receives Social Security benefits on March 11, 2026?
As it falls on the second Wednesday in March 2026, next week’s payment run covers birthdays between the first and 10th of any month. This month’s full three-Wednesdays payment cycle is as follows:
- Born on 1st-10th: Weds., March 11
- Born on 11th-20th: Weds., March 18
- Born on 21st-31st: Weds., March 25
Who isn’t paid on a Wednesday in March?
- Certain long-term Social Security recipients
Beneficiaries who began receiving retirement, disability or survivor benefits before May 1997 are typically paid on the third day of each month, regardless of date of birth. In March, these long-standing recipients were therefore scheduled to be sent their benefits on Tuesday, March 3.
- Recipients of SSI
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - a separate SSA benefit for low-income Americans who are over 65 or have a disability - are usually paid on the first of the month, no matter what their birthday is.
However, as March 1 was a Sunday, this month’s SSI was sent out on the nearest business day before then: Friday, February 27.
Unlike the SSA’s retirement, disability and survivor programs, SSI is a purely needs-based scheme. It does not depend on prior Social Security-tax contributions.
- Dual recipients (SSI + regular Social Security)
There are around 2.5 million people in the U.S. who receive both SSI and one of the SSA’s retirement, disability or survivor benefits. For March, these dual beneficiaries were to scheduled to be paid the former on February 27, and the latter on March 3.
Non-Wednesday payments - March 2026:
- SSI: Fri., February 27
- Pre-May ’97 Social Sec.: Tue., March 3
- Dual recipients: SSI on Fri., February 27; Social Sec. on Tue., March 3

How does the Social Security Administration send out benefits?
The SSA offers beneficiaries two electronic methods of receiving payments:
- Direct deposit

- Direct Express Card
Benefits can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal payments made to recipients without a bank account. You can sign up for Direct Express by calling 1-800-333-1795 or visiting the service’s website.
