Social Security beneficiaries are about to receive a new round of payments. The Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of checks monthly to program beneficiaries. The majority of recipients are retired workers, as well as people with some type of disability who typically fall into the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) category.

Although the amount that will be received depends on the situation of each beneficiary, official estimates from the SSA place the average amount for retired workers at $1,907 for individuals and $3,303 for couples. As for SSI beneficiaries, the average payment is $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples filing jointly.

Checks are issued every Wednesday, depending on the recipient’s date of birth. Those who were born between the 1st and 10th receive the money on the second Wednesday of the month; those from the 11th to the 20th on the third; and those from the 21st to the 31st, on the fourth. Workers who retired before May 1997 and SSI beneficiaries receive the checks on the first day of the month, regardless of the day they were born.

Taking into account the payment schedule, as well as the estimated amounts and who the beneficiaries are, here is what the check distribution schedule looks like for the month of April, according to the Social Security Administration:

  • Monday 1 April: SSI beneficiaries
  • Wednesday 3: Beneficiaries who began receiving their payments before May 1997
  • Wednesday the 10th: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 1st and the 10th
  • Wednesday the 17th: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 11th and the 20th
  • Wednesday 24: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 21st and 31st

The amounts mentioned are only estimates. To determine the exact figure, in the case of retirees, the SSA takes into consideration various factors, such as the salary received during the years worked and the taxes paid to Insurance during that same period of time.

A formula is applied to these earnings to arrive at the amount of primary insurance and finally, the amount is adjusted based on the age at which the recipient applied for benefits.
