Social Security experts agree: Stop stressing about your medical and work CDRs

Update:

Americans that have gone through the process of applying for Social Security disability know that it is a very taxing experience, requiring collecting extensive documentation and a lot of patience. So it’s no wonder that when a beneficiary hears that they will be receiving a medical or work continuing disability review (CDR) from the Social Security Administration they may feel a bit of a panic attack.

However, experts say not to worry if you receive a notification from the SSA informing you that you will be getting a CDR that there is nothing to fear.

Social Security experts say don’t sweat CDRs

Medical and work CDRs are a routine function of the SSA that are conducted on a periodic basis for all recipients of disability benefits every few years to see if you are still disabled. Michael Liner, a disability lawyer, shared on TikTok that unlike when you first apply for Social Security disability, the burden of proof to show that your condition has changed and improved for the better is on the SSA.

He urges people to continue to see their doctors and go to a consultative examination if the SSA schedules one for you. Also make sure that your doctors and any medical professionals that you are sent to “understand that there has not been any improvement in your conditions since you were first found disabled,” Liner says. “If nothing has changed or if your condition has gotten even worse your benefits should continue.”

Dr. Ed Weir, a former Social Security manager, recommends that disability beneficiaries keep a diary of their symptoms. Additionally, he points out that although you may have a CDR coming, you may not have one because there wasn’t enough funding.

So, Weir says forget about it until you receive a notification. When you do, complete it, make copies of it and then forget about it again. “Stop stressing about CDRs,” he urges listeners.
