Social security payments: who can receive the $1907 for retirees and disabled?

The Social Security Administration sends payments each month to the disabled, retirees and their survivors. Here’s who can get more than one benefit.

Así podría afectar la inflación al aumento al COLA en 2025

The Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out nearly 72 million payments each month to beneficiaries. They include those issued to retired and disabled workers as well as their survivors. Also Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments to low-income adults and children who have a disability or blindness.

A beneficiary cannot receive both Old-Age benefits and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) at the same time under law. The latter benefits convert to retirement benefits when the recipient reaches full retirement age. However, if you meet the strict financial criteria while drawing either Social Security Old-Age or SSDI benefits, you may be able to collect SSI benefits at the same time.

Social security payments: who can receive the $1907 for retirees and disabled?

The SSA announced the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in October, boosting benefits by 3.2% in 2024 over the previous year’s amount. The increase to monthly payments took effect with those sent out corresponding to January this year. The first group of beneficiaries to see the 2024 COLA reflected were SSI recipients with those payments issued 29 December 2023.

The maximum monthly SSI benefits in 2024 increased to $934 for individuals and $1,415 for couples. At the same time, the average Social Security payment for retired workers rose to $1,907. For beneficiaries that qualify for both payments, their Social Security payment amount, minus $20, will be subtracted from what they can receive from Supplemental Security Income.

When are Social Security and SSI payments sent?

Retired workers receive benefit payments on Wednesdays, based on their date of birth. Those born from the 1st to the 10th receive the check on the second Wednesday of the month. Those with birth dates from the 11th to the 20th on the third Wednesday, and those from the 21th to the 31st, the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Retired workers who began claiming benefits before May 1997 do not fall into the previous scheme. Instead they receive their payment on the third of each month, and so too do those who receive both Social Security and SSI benefits. SSI recipients are issued payments on the first of each month.

The first and third of each month can fall on weekends or holidays. When this be the case, the payment is moved forward to the earliest business day prior to the first or third of the month.
