Update:

The Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program is an expedited way that the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses to identify and process disability claims for individuals with certain severe medical conditions. The specific medical conditions included in the CAL list are severe, life-threatening, or highly disabling conditions.

The program is designed to quickly provide financial assistance to people who are clearly disabled and unable to work due to their medical conditions, without the need for extensive medical documentation and lengthy processing times.

“The Social Security Administration remains committed to reducing barriers and ensuring people who are eligible for benefits receive them,” said Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi.

“Our Compassionate Allowances program allows us to reinforce that commitment by expediting the disability application process for people with the most severe disabilities,” she added.

The list is periodically updated to include new conditions based on medical advancements and research. According to the press release associated with the new information, nearly 900,000 people with severe disabilities have been approved through this accelerated, policy-compliant disability process, which now includes a total of 278 conditions.
