Spain in shock: At least one dead and approximately 20 injured as train hits wall in Barcelona
A passenger train has struck a retaining wall near Barcelona, two days after another deadly derailment in Spain.

A moving passenger train struck a retaining wall that had fallen onto the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní in the province of Barcelona, killing the driver and injuring approximately 20 people, Rodalies, the main commuter and regional rail system in Catalonia, confirmed. Emergency crews have dispatched 11 ambulances and a joint team with firefighters to assist the victims.
Catalonia’s emergency services activated the Ferrocat plan on the R4 line to coordinate the response. Early reports suggest that heavy rainfall in the region over the past few days may have contributed to the wall’s collapse.

Another train incident near Girona
Later in the afternoon, a second train carrying 10 passengers derailed near Blanes in Girona, just over 50 miles to the north east of Barcelona, after rocks fell onto the tracks. No injuries were reported in that incident, which occurred on the R1 line between Maçanet Massanes and Tordera. Authorities say recent storms are again the most likely cause.
Both accidents have disrupted rail service in the affected areas while crews continue to clear tracks and assess safety.
Fatal train crash kills 42
On Sunday evening, two high-speed trains collided near the Andalusian city of Córdoba, which lies on the Madrid to Málaga route. At least 42 people have been killed.
