SSI recipients on tenterhooks: May will bring changes in payments that could lead to chaos

The payment schedule for recipients of Supplemental Security Income checks is changing again in May. Here’s what you need to know...

Update:

Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks from the federal government could be forgiven for losing track of the payment schedule in 2025. In February some SSI beneficiaries received two checks, with March’s payment coming a few days early.

The same is happening in May, with two payments coming for those scheduled to receive their money in the first batch of payment distribution. SSI recipients who have been in receipt of some form of Social Security support since May 1997 are usually paid on the first of the month.

However the June 1 payment falls on a weekend, meaning that it is brought forward to the previous Friday. That means that SSI beneficiaries used to getting their payments early in the month will get their May payment on May 1 and their June payment on May 30.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that there is an extra payment in the offing, simply that the second is brought forward. The same happens in August, when the early SSI recipients will get one payment on August 1 and another (the September payments) on August 29.

What is the SSI schedule for 2025?

The Supplemental Security Income program is currently offering support to around 7.4 million Americans, a third of whom also get Social Security payments. The additional support is typically reserved for disabled Americans and those with limited resources. Generally, SSI recipients earn less than $2,019 per month.
