State Tax Rebates: What states are sending out rebate checks in August?

18 states are speeding up different payment methods in an effort to stem inflationary pressure on their residents.

It is no secret that the highest inflation for nearly 50 years is taking its toll on people’s coffers. Fortunately, quite a few states are offering extra support in various forms. These include tax rebates as well as inflation relief checks.

Here is the full list of the states offering the support.

California

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the California state budget that included a $17 billion relief package. Among the measures is $9.5 billion portion that will send Golden Staters “inflation relief checks” for up to $1,050 for eligible California residents.

The payments are expected to begin going out in October via direct deposit and debit cards.

Colorado

Residents who filed their 2021 taxes were expecting to receive up to $800 back through the 1992 Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) Amendment, but now this figure has nearly doubled to $1,500 for joint filers. Solo filers will receive $750.

Delaware

Taxpayers who filed a 2020 Delaware state tax return can look forward to seeing a $300relief rebate”. For those that didn’t file a return or if you have further questions about the measure, the Delaware Department of Finance has provided a Frequently Asked Questions page.

Florida

Through the Department of Children and Families’ Hope Florida—A Pathway to Prosperity program, some Florida households with children will receive a one-time payment of $450 per child.

To qualify, families must receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, be a foster parent or a relative or non-relative caregiver or a part of the Guardianship Assistance Program.

Georgia

Georgia households that filed both their 2020 and 2021 tax returns could get between $250 and $500 in the form of a one-time tax rebate depending on filing status. The Peach State’s historic state budget surplus made the payments possible.

Hawaii

Beginning in late August, filers of the 2021 tax returns could receive up to $300 back, but only if they earn under $100,000. Those people earning between that figure and $200,000 will receive a $100 payout.

Idaho

Each taxpayer will receive either $75 or 12 percent of your 2020 Idaho state taxes, whichever is larger. Those who were full-year residents in Idaho during 2020 and 2021 and filed a grocery tax credit or income tax return for both years are eligible.

Illinois

Illinois residents who reported making less than $200,000 per year or $400,000 per couple filing jointly will receive $50 and $100, respectively. A dependent would bag an extra $100 a maximum of three times.

These will be sent out from September 12.

Indiana

Governor Eric Holcomb announced in June that on top of the $125 Hoosiers are currently receiving from the state’s automatic taxpayer refund, he wants to use $1 billion for the state’s budget surplus to send an additional $225. These extra payments are yet to pass through the governor’s desk, however.

Maine

Over 850,000 Mainers who filed a 2021 tax return will receive direct relief payments of $850 to help cover the increased cost of things. Eligible residents who did not file a state tax return for 2021 can file through 31 October to claim their payment.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts has specific tax law that excess tax paid to the government is redistributed back to residents. 7 percent of each person’s tax filing would be returned.

Minnesota

While the application period has closed, frontline workers in Minnesota are in line to receive a payment of $750. According to the state Department of Labor and Industry, checks will be sent to those who are approved and will arrive between August 16 and August 31.

New Jersey

Homeowners earning under $150,000 will receive $1,500 rebates on property taxes. Those earning above that threshold but under $250,000 will still receive $1,000. Renters are not left out too. If they earn under $1,500 a year then they will receive $450.

These payments are not expected to be swift and are likely to be sent before May next year.

New Mexico

All taxpayers, including those who receive the before mentioned direct payment, will be sent two equal payments in July and August for a total of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for joint filers.

Residents who don’t file a tax return won’t be left out. There is a pot of $20 million and people can access that on a first-come-first-serve basis.

South Carolina

Income tax refund checks of up to $800 will be sent out to taxpayers in late November or December 2022, though it could be some months before they are all sent out. The rebates are being issued per person, regardless of whether you filed individually or jointly.

Virginia

Starting mid-October, the Virginia Department of Taxation will begin sending state residents who filed a state tax return prior to 1 July a tax rebate of $250 per individual. In order to receive the one-time payment, Virginians must file by 1 November 2022. The tax authorities advise those residents who have moved to update their mailing address by 15 August, also known as ASAP.
