Stimulus checks and refunds in September 2023: which states pay and amounts
Massachusetts
Taxpayers can receive a refund of approximately 14% of their state tax liability. Anyone who paid personal income taxes in Massachusetts for the 2021 tax year and filed a 2021 state tax return on or before September 15, 2023 is eligible to receive a refund.
Payments are sent about a month after you file your tax return, so if you filed in August, you will receive your payment in September. If you are eligible for a refund, you will automatically receive it as a check mailed by post or via direct deposit. More details here.
Minnesota
More than 2 million Minnesotans will see a one-time tax refund thanks to a recent tax law update.
The legislation, signed in May, provides $520 payments for married couples who file a joint 2021 income or property tax return and have an adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less.
On the other hand, payments of $260 will go to people with 2021 adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less. Another $260 will be distributed for each dependent claimed on a return, for up to three dependents.
According to the Minnesota Department of Revenue, direct deposit payments will be sent first, followed by paper checks sent by mail. Payments are expected to begin in late September.

On the other hand, the state continues to send individual income tax refunds, which provide individual taxpayers with $1,250 or the amount on line 20 on Form 2, whichever is less. Married couples filing jointly receive $2,500 or the amount on line 20, whichever is less. Refunds began in July and will continue until December.
New Mexico
State residents will receive a refund of $500 for single filers and $1,000 for taxpayers who filed or are filing a personal income tax return ( PIT) for 2021 and are not declared as dependents on another taxpayer’s return.
According to the refund web portal, checks and direct deposits were mailed in June. However, eligible residents have until May 31, 2024 to file their 2021 PIT return to receive their refund. If they filed last month or this month, they could receive their money in September.
