Stimulus checks in July 2023: Which states pay and how much

Learn about the states that will deliver stimulus checks or tax refunds in July. Here’s how to request the financial assistance and what the amounts are.

After inflation reached historic levels last year, several entities in the US approved the sending of stimulus checks or tax refunds to help those who were most affected.

Although inflation has fallen considerably in recent months, several states across the country continue to send out checks or tax refunds to help their residents. Here are the states that are sending financial assistance in July and how much they will be giving out.

Colorado

The state of Colorado has implemented the Property Tax Rebate/Rental/Heating Credit. These are the eligibility requirements for this benefit.

  • Have lived in Colorado from January 1 to December 31, 2022
  • Have a total income of less than $16,925 for single taxpayers and $22,858 for married filing jointly.
  • As of December 31, 2022, be age 65 or older, be a surviving spouse age 58 or older, or be a disabled person of any age who has qualified for full benefits from January 1 to December 31, 2022 from any public or private plan or source based solely on their disability.
  • Have paid property taxes, rent, or heating bills during the PTC period.
  • Not be claimed as a dependent on another person's federal tax return.

The refund amount can be up to $1,044 per year for applicants and if you apply in 2023, you could receive a refundable tax credit of up to $1,000.

Payment for those whose application was approved and processed by June 10 was sent out on July 5 via direct deposit. The rest of the payments will be mailed on July 15. For more information or to claim payment, visit the program’s web portal.

Massachusetts

Taxpayers are eligible to receive a refund of approximately 14% of their state tax liability. People who file their 2021 return before September 15, 2023, will receive the payment one month after filing. If you filed your return in June, you will receive your payment in July.

New Mexico

State residents will receive a refund of $500 for single filers and $1,000 for joint filers. Payment submissions will be mailed in the first days of this month for those who filed their 2021 income tax return. Taxpayers have until May 31, 2024 to file their return and be able to get a refund.

Pennsylvania

The state has the Rental/Property Tax Refund Program, which benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers over 50 years of age; and people with disabilities over the age of 18.

The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for qualified homeowners can increase rebates to $975. Applications have been accepted through June 30 and payments begin this month.

It takes an additional four to six weeks from the date your claim is approved for your refund to be mailed or direct deposited. For more information, FAQs, or to check the status of your payment, visit the program web portal.
