With the damage done by Hurricane Helene still being evaluated in Florida, the state is preparing for a barrage of rain this weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning residents of South Florida that two major rain storms.

How much rain could fall in South Florida?

On Thursday, the NWS Prediction Center released a rain forecast for Florida and the surrounding states, showing that South Florida could see between five to seven inches of rain over the next seven days. Up in the Northern counties of the state that were hit hardest by Helene, between 1 and two inches are possible, with the totals falling as one moves further north on the map. The NWS also warned that conditions are expected to worsen between Sunday and Wednesday, meaning those reading this on Saturday, October 5, should begin any necessary precautions in case homes lose power or roads become undrivable.

Meteorologists are still working to predict the storm’s possible path. The Miami NWS office explained that “the exact rainfall totals over the next week and where the localized picks of higher amounts will fall” remain unknown.

A possible storm brewing in the Gulf of Mexico

The NWS says their analysts are monitoring a low-pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico that could develop into a tropical storm in the next seven days. Heavy rain is expected to befall the area this weekend, and “localized flooding is possible across” the Miami area. With the impacts of Hurricane Helene present in the minds of many in the state, the NWS hopes to keep residents up to date on the possible development of a major storm to ensure residents are prepared. For now, the agency is encouraging residents to keep updated with the Miami NWS office and the National Hurricane Center.
