Tax deadlines you need to be aware of in 2024

Tax season is well underway and this least will keep you abreast of all the important upcoming dates before the deadline.

29 January kicked-off the official beginning of the 2023 tax filing season. Filers are having nearly three full months for which to file their taxes with the deadline on 15 April. However, it is not worth leaving it late as the sooner you file your taxes, the sooner the IRS can process your refund, if that is what you are owed.

Here is a list of the crucial dates you need to put in your diary for 2024. The crucial date, the closing of the filing season, has been marked in italics. Certainly one to put on the calendar.

Important dates for tax season 2024

  • 29 January: IRS begins 2024 tax season and starts accepting and processing individual 2023 tax returns 
  • 15 April: National due date to file a 2023 tax return or request an extension and pay tax owed
  • 17 June: Tax deadline for Americans living abroad
  • July: Deadline to clain 2020 tax refund
  • 15 October: Due date to file for those requesting an extension on their 2023 tax returns.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 set the federal tax brackets in the US until 2025.

These brackets represent the percentage of income that individuals within each bracket pay in federal income tax. State and local taxes can also apply, but they vary by location.
