TAX SEASON 2024

Tax season 2024: When is this year’s deadline if you request an extension?

Tax season is here, and if you need a bit more time to file, you can request an extension. Until when will you have?

Update:
What’s left of a $100K salary after taxes in each state

Tax season is here, and if you can already tell you will need more time, you can apply for an extension to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). However, those making this type of request should be aware that the extension applies to submitting the return, not to any taxes owed to the agency.

The extension will push back the filing deadline to Monday, 15 October. To obtain one, you can use the IRS Free File software to make the request. The request needs to be made by 15 April, 2024.

Special cases when applying for an extension

If you are serving in a combat zone or a qualified hazardous duty, there are special rules that you should be aware of when requesting an extension. Similar rules exist for those living outside the US or in areas that have been declared disaster situations.

Members of the military who are in a combat zone are under an extension that applies “to most tax actions required to be performed on or after the beginning date for your combat zone, or the date you began serving in that combat zone, whichever is later.” Many other frequently asked questions can be found on the IRS website.

Taxpayers living abroad should submit a tax return, but if their income is below $120,000, they will be excluded from taxation by the IRS. More information on filing from abroad can also be found on the IRS’ website.

Lastly, automatic extensions are given to taxpayers in areas affected by natural disasters. Storms and other events can destroy financial records and delay a taxpayer.

Which areas have been offered an extension?

  • Connecticut:  New London County, the Tribal Nations of Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot
  • Rhode Island: Providence County
  • Tennessee: Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Gibson, Montgomery, Stewart and Sumner Counties

By clicking on the state you will get access to the details on the extensions that have been offered this tax season so far.
