The federal minimum wage in the United States has been set at $7.25 per hour since 2009, the longest period without adjustment since the minimum wage was implemented in 1938.

Since federal rates do not reflect the cost of living and affect many families' ability to meet basic needs, some states are increasing their minimum wage every year.

Currently, 30 states, along with the District of Columbia, have laws that offer their residents a base salary above the federal level. Some of them have legislation that provides for annual salary increases.

States that do not have such measures adopt the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

Unfortunately, Texas is one of the states that implement the federal rate. However, given the growing needs of workers, some cities in the Lone Star State have begun to put measures in place to ensure better wages for their employees.

Texas cities that have pledged to raise their minimum wage next year include Austin, Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

In Austin, the minimum wage is $20.80 an hour, nearly three times the federal minimum. The change was implemented to keep wages competitive and ensure that city workers can meet rising costs of living.

Houston has pledged to raise the minimum wage to $15.04 an hour by 2025, while Dallas is expected to raise the amount to a minimum of $14 an hour, almost double the federal level. Fort Worth is expected to increase to $10 an hour, and San Antonio to $15.04.

With this change, Texas' major cities are competing with states that offer the highest minimum wages in the country, including Washington, California, and New York, and the District of Columbia, where the minimum wage is between $16 and $17.
