The grieving community of Uvalde, Texas, has received outpouring support this week as millions of dollars were raised for the families affected by the massacre that left 21 dead and 17 injured on Tuesday.

As of Sunday evening, over $5.5 million dollars have been raised.

Of all the money raised, the largest amount has been made to the family of Joe and Irma Garcia. Irma was one of the two teachers killed in the shooting, and Joe, her husband, died two days later of a heart attack. The Garcias left behind four children.

Irma’s cousin, Debra Austin, reportedly started the campaign that’s been backed up by the CNN and The Washington Post. The campaign started with a goal of $10,000 before being combined with another campaign set up by John Martinez, Irma Garcia’s nephew, which raised over $550,000, including a boost from philanthropist Bill Pulte who asked his 3.2 million Twitter followers to donate to it.

Miah Cerillo played dead to survive

Other GoFundMe campaigns have been initiated to help raise money in honor of victims and others who made it alive, including 11-year-old Miah Cerrillo, who told CNN she played dead to survive.

Cerillo told reporters that she smeared blood on herself in fear that the gunman would return to kill her, and has wounds from being hit with fragments in a shoulder and the head. Cerillo’s mother is working on using the money raised to get her 11-year-old to therapy after these traumatizing events.
