The national tax filing deadline is Tuesday, 18 April, giving residents of Texas just a few more days to submit their returns on time. Returns are due by midnight on the 18th, and according to the IRS, it is best to file as soon as possible to avoid delays in receiving your refund.

Texas is one of a few of states that does not levy tax on income, meaning that a return does not need to be submitted to the state too. However, a higher sales tax allows the state to make up some of the revanue it loses by not taxing income.

Where can I get assistance filing my federal tax return in Texas?

There is still time to request assistance filing your tax return.

The IRS has permanent and temporary offices across the state that have staff and volunteers on hand to assist filers. There are a total of 18 offices, and you can locate the one closest to you using the IRS’ online tool. Most of these offices offer services ranging from providing basic individual tax law assistance to helping filers identify and obtain the correct forms and more.

Can I file an extension?

Yes. Anyone can file an extension which will give them until mid-October to submit their return to the IRS. However, if you request an extension, you should know that it does not apply to any taxes you must pay on or before 18 April.

The IRS Free File program can be used to request an extension electronically, regardless of a filer’s income. For those who plan to submit a paper return, the documents must be postmarked by 16 October.

Further information on the process can be found here.
