One of the oldest and most significant holidays in the United States is just around the corner: Thanksgiving. This celebration, held on the last Thursday of November, is all about bringing family and friends together for a traditional dinner where gratitude is expressed for all the blessings in life.

Given its proximity to winter, Christmas, and New Year’s, Thanksgiving is considered the kickoff to the holiday season. And if there’s one thing that characterizes this time of year, it’s the light (and sometimes heavy) blanket of snow covering various states. This November 28, some regions will indeed be painted white.

Snowstorm on Thanksgiving: states expecting snow on November 28

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), parts of the West Coast and Midwest are expected to be hit by a snowstorm on Thanksgiving.

In California, particularly in the Sierra Nevada, a winter storm is anticipated from this weekend through Tuesday, November 26. This storm will bring snow to the higher parts of the mountain range and winds up to 55 miles per hour. It is estimated there could be up to four feet of snow.

“A weak low-pressure system will continue to send a plume of moisture to the West Coast over the next few days,” warns the Weather Prediction Center. “This will likely result in coastal and lowland rain, while moderate to heavy snow will spread across the coastal ranges of Washington, Oregon, and California.”

Specifically for California, another weather system is expected to arrive by Tuesday, extending winter conditions to the central part of the state through Thanksgiving. Snow is also forecasted for parts of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

The Midwest and Great Lakes regions will also experience extreme weather, with rain and snow starting Monday, November 25.

By Thursday, November 28, a low-pressure system will move eastward into the Northeast during the afternoon, according to CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan. This will bring rain and possible snow to New York, northern New Hampshire, Maine, and the Adirondack Mountains.
