Update:

The Indian Air Force has recently signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the acquisition of 12 new Su-30MKI fighter jets, aimed at strengthening its air combat capabilities and supporting the development of the local military industry. This deal, valued at approximately 13,500 million rupees (around 150 million euros), highlights India’s commitment to modernizing its air fleet and achieving defense self-sufficiency.

Power and autonomy

The Su-30MKI is a multi-role fighter of Russian origin, adapted to the specific needs of the Indian Air Force. Equipped with AL-31FP engines, these aircraft provide greater power and autonomy, allowing them to conduct air superiority and ground attack missions more effectively. They also feature advanced radar and detection systems that enhance their ability to identify and neutralize threats in airspace.

The production of these 12 fighter jets will take place at HAL’s Nashik plant, which will not only strengthen the Air Force’s combat capabilities but also boost the local defense industry, creating jobs and fostering technology transfer. This focus on domestic production is part of the “Make in India” initiative, which aims to increase defense self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on imports.

Despite this progress, HAL has faced criticism for delays in the delivery of aircraft and components. The Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh, recently expressed frustration with the slow pace of aircraft production and delivery, which has affected the Air Force’s operational capabilities. In response, HAL has committed to accelerating production and delivery of the fighter jets, assuring that operations at the Nashik plant will resume to meet the set deadlines.

Future outlook

With the addition of these 12 new Su-30MKIs, the Indian Air Force aims to maintain and enhance its deterrence capacity in the region, particularly amid the geopolitical tensions in South Asia. The modernization of the air fleet is crucial to ensure national security and project power in the region. Furthermore, this agreement strengthens the strategic relationship between India and Russia in the defense sector, consolidating a partnership that has been key in acquiring advanced military technology.

Meanwhile, the global response to this strengthening of India’s air power has been mixed. Some analysts see the expansion of its defense capabilities as a potential threat to the regional security order, while others consider this modernization a natural part of the development process for a global power.

The acquisition of the 12 Su-30MKIs marks a significant step in modernizing the Indian Air Force, enhancing its air combat capabilities, and supporting the growth of the local defense industry. As challenges in production and delivery are addressed, this agreement underscores India’s commitment to defense self-sufficiency and its determination to maintain a modern and effective air force.
