Update:

We’ve all been there, aimlessly scrolling through many of the social media apps that have us hypnotised as they look to for us to engage with the myriad of available content.

If you, like many other users are anxious about the amount of time wasted on this ‘zombie scroll’, then the Focus Friend app may be just what you need. This productivity app developed by online educator and YouTuber Hank Green is designed to help people stay focused and avoid distractions like “doom scrolling” on their phones.

The app’s core concept is a gamified focus timer. Users set a timer for a specific amount of time, and during that time, a cute animated “bean” character works on a knitting project. The goal is to complete the timer without switching to other apps on your phone.

How Focus Friend works

When you start a focus session, your customizable cartoon bean friend begins knitting socks or scarves.

If you interrupt your focus session by leaving the app, the bean’s knitting unravels, and it looks sad. This emotional component is a key part of the app’s appeal, as it motivates users to stay on task to avoid disappointing their little friend.

For each completed session, the bean gives you knitted socks. These socks can be used as in-app currency to buy decorations and furniture to customize the bean’s room.

The app is free to download and use, with no ads. It is supported by in-app purchases for things like extra “bean skins” (e.g., a coffee bean or a John Green bean) and the ability to knit scarves (which are worth more currency).
