For most of the USA and Canada this weekend, the clocks will go back one hour on Sunday as part of the Fall daylight saving time (with the clocks moving forward each March).

This event takes place in the United States and Canada on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November in an effort to take advantage on extended hours of sunlight with the measure a means of saving energy and also a manner of reducing crime and road accidents. However, in recent years, voices of dissent have been growing steadily staring that these twice yearly changes take a toll on people’s health that outweighs any advantages.

Getting ready to ‘Fall back’

Whilst the change of hour not a major issue for most of us, and the ‘Fall back’ change easier on our sleep pattern with an extra 60 minutes sleep time, there are a few steps we can take to ensure that any disruption is minimal.

1) Change your older analogue clocks in advance with digital devices set to update automatically
2) Tweak your sleep pattern in the week ahead of DST by ten minutes per night
3) Amend you meal times gradually in advance to be ready for the hour chage
4) Use the extra early morning light for more activity, walking or jogging outdoors
5) Eat lighter evening meals
