The controversial decision of the Girl Scouts that will multiply the price of their membership

A 160% increase over just two years is actually smaller than the original plan and one which will surely shake up the organisation.

In a move aimed at addressing financial challenges, the Girl Scouts’ National Council Session recently voted to approve a two-step increase in annual membership fees.

Starting from the current $25 annual fee, the membership cost will rise as follows:

  • 2025: Remains at $25
  • 2026: Increases to $45
  • 2027: Rises further to $65

This decision marks the first time in eight years that GSUSA has raised its membership dues. In comparison, the Boy Scouts of America currently charge an annual membership fee of $85.

“The proposals are directly tied to supporting our local councils and improving program delivery for current and future members,” a Girl Scouts of the USA, or GSUSA, spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.

Why the Girl Scouts are struggling financially

The main reason for the price hikes is a growing debt. The organization is anticipating a net operating loss of approximately $5 million for the current fiscal year, taking their overall debt to $15 million. The current issue is their credit limit is reached, and urgent refinancing is needed.

Thus, the price hikes are likely an efort to show potential creditors that there will be a return on their support, instead of propping up a company with millions of dollars just to see it collapse.
