The country where you can live comfortably on $300 a month—and why expats can’t get enough of it
From $1.70 restaurant meals to $287 rent, this Southeast Asian nation has become the world’s cheapest place to live.
For the fifth year in a row, Vietnam has been ranked the cheapest country in the world to live, according to a new report from InterNations.
Nearly 9 in 10 expats living in Vietnam say they’re satisfied with the cost of living, and 87% believe their income allows them to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.
That combination of low costs, safety, and quality of life has turned Vietnam into a magnet not just for tourists but also for digital nomads and long-term residents looking for an affordable home base.
Why Vietnam attracts expats
Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia’s most popular destinations thanks to its rich history, diverse landscapes, and renowned cuisine.
For anyone arriving with a Western salary, daily expenses can feel shockingly low. A meal at a casual restaurant costs around $1.70, while monthly rent averages just $287. Even a dinner for two at a nicer spot rarely tops $25.
On top of affordability, Vietnam is considered stable and safe, ranking 38th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index. That level of security is another major draw for international residents.
