The Social Security Administration (SSA) is increasing Social Security and SSI payments next year thanks to the cost of living adjustment (COLA).
In 2025, the COLA will be 2.5%, so SSI and Social Security payments, which include retired workers, survivors, and Social Security Disability Insurance benefits (SSDI) will get a corresponding boost.
Although SSI payments are generally sent on the first day of each month, the January payment is brought forward because the first day of 2025 is a holiday. falls on Wednesday.
When will increased payments begin to be sent?
The COLA goes into effect in December and should be applied for the first time in January 2025.
According to the SSA payment schedule, SSI benefits are sent on the first day of the month. However, if it falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, it is brought forward to the first previous business day.
Because January 1, 2025 is a holiday, the first increased SSI payment is move up and sent the day prior. This date also affects other payments as people who began receiving their SSA payments before May 1997 will also have their payment date moved up.
The remainder of the first increased Social Security payments they will be sent on the following dates:
- Tuesday, December 31, 2024: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment and benefits for those who began receiving their payments before May 1997
- Wednesday January 8: Payments for beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 1st and the 10th
- Wednesday January 15: Payments for beneficiaries with dates of birth between the 11th and the 20th
- Wednesday January 22: Payments for beneficiaries with dates of birth between the 21st and 31st
Beneficiaries can view their COLA notice online through their my Social Security account, which is faster than receiving a letter by mail.
