The futuristic airport that Saudi Arabia is planning in one of the most war-torn countries
Saudi Arabia is set to invest more than $2 billion in key infrastructure projects in Syria after signing a major investment package.
Syria and Saudi Arabia have reached a wide-ranging investment agreement covering aviation, energy, real estate, and telecommunications, aimed at rebuilding the country after 14 years of civil war.
Talal al-Hilali, head of the Syrian Investment Authority, announced that the agreements include the construction of a new international airport in Aleppo, the launch of a Syrian-Saudi low-cost airline, and a telecommunications project known as SilkLink. The new airline, Flynas Syria, is expected to begin operations by the end of this year.
Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid al-Falih confirmed that the new Elaf Fund will finance large-scale projects and allocate over $2 billion to the development of two airports in Aleppo.
$1 billion
Meanwhile, Syria’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abdulsalam Haykal, stated that the country will receive close to $1 billion in telecommunications investments, with the goal of improving connectivity between Asia and Europe.
According to officials, the agreements focus on “vital sectors that impact people’s lives and form essential pillars for rebuilding the Syrian economy.”
The United States Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, praised the deal on the social media platform X, saying that strategic partnerships in aviation, infrastructure, and telecommunications will make a significant contribution to the country’s reconstruction.
However, some analysts remain cautious. Benjamin Feve, a senior researcher at Karam Shaar Advisory, noted that these agreements are “far more as a political signal than as an economic game changer.”
