The ‘house swallowed by the Earth’ that was abandoned during the pandemic has been transformed into a luxury hotel
An unfinished seaside build in Argentina puzzled locals for years – until it quietly reemerged with a radically different purpose.

A striking concrete structure stood unfinished for nearly three years in Argentina’s Buenos Aires province. Its irregular design, with a pronounced tilt on both the front and rear façades, turned it into a recognizable landmark and a source of speculation about what its ultimate fate might be.
Construction had begun in 2019 as a family seaside home, as reported by La Nacion, conceived by entrepreneur Martín Mc Guire and designed by architect Julieta Lépore. But in 2020, the pandemic forced work to stop and directly affected the developer’s company. Years later, the project took an unexpected turn.
In 2023, the structure was converted into a high-end, adults-only hotel with 15 exclusive rooms. Located in the Los Acantilados area, south of Mar del Plata, the building was already popularly known as “the leaning house” or “the house the earth is swallowing.” Its official name is Locus Solus.
A singular hotel by the sea
The hotel accommodates a maximum of 31 guests and does not allow children or pets. Thirteen of its rooms face the ocean, and all are doubles with private bathrooms, each featuring a distinct design. Nightly rates are around $360 for the top suite and from about $240 for the remaining rooms.
The architectural project was expanded to suit its new role, adding an extra floor, a spa, landscaped areas, a swimming pool, and a gym. From the hotel’s management, the aim is to offer a space for rest and well-being in close connection with nature, turning each stay into a different experience for visitors.
