The latest Digital Nomad Visa Index report is out, and a new comer to countries that offer special visas to foreign teleworkers has taken the top spot.

According to the latest report of the Digital Nomad Visa Index prepared by VisaGuide.World, Spain has established itself as the most favorable destination for digital nomads in 2024 with a score of 4.5 out of 5. The ranking takes into account several factors, such as visa availability, internet speed, tax policies, tax-free periods, income requirements for visa applications, cost of living, overall health score and tourist popularity.

Spain has soared to the top of the list surpassing other destinations that were historically popular among digital nomads, such as Portugal or Costa Rica. While the former found its way to sixth place on the list, the latter, which is considered a favorite destination of expats looking to carry out there job in a foreign country, didn’t make it into VisaGuide.World’s top ten.

Part of the reason why Spain claimed the top spot in 2024 is thanks to its friendly tax policy, allowing digital nomads to live in the nation for a year without paying taxes, and low taxes the following year. Portugal is planning changes to its non-habitual resident tax policies for expats that move to the nation starting next year. This rise in teleworking has raised problems, such as soaring housing costs in cities, mention by António Costa, the Portugese Prime Minister, as part of the reason that changes need to be made.

The report highlights that Spain allows digital nomads to live in the country with a special visa, paying less taxes and under certain conditions. The requirements to obtain the visa include no criminal record during the last five years, having private health insurance, a one-year employment contract with a foreign company, and at least three years of work experience or a university degree in the relevant field.

Additionally, Spain has announced that it will allow spouses and families to join applicants with a digital nomad visa, as long as they prove they have enough income to live on. The country established that digital nomads can reside in Spain if they earn at least 2,140 euros per month.
