Is that really Rudy Giuliani under there?” said viewers who tuned into Fox’s ‘The Masked Singer’ last season. The show’s eighth season will premier tonight at 8 p.m., competing against CBS’s ‘Survivor’, which has reached its forty-third season.

While the first season attracted around eleven million viewers, those numbers have been cut in half over the years. Last season around 5.85 million people tuned in to see Teyana Taylor take home the grand prize as ‘Firefly.’ Coming in second place was ‘Ring Master’ or Hayley Orrantia, known for her role as Erica Goldberg in the ABC show, The Goldbergs. The third-place winner was Cheyenne Jackson, who performed as the ‘Prince.’

Many of the reviews left on Rotten Tomato point to a lack of interest by those tuning in, one viewer posting, “It’s a bit much. Never really got into it. I watched the full first season but haven’t bothered with it since.” This could help to explain the drop off in viewership, but even at 5.85 million viewers, the show has been renewed. The show will air at the same time as ‘Survivor’ which attracted around 7.2 million viewers last season, posing an additional audience issue for ‘The Masked Singer.’

Who may participate this year?

Today’s show will open with a performance from P!nk, who say her song, Hopeless, live in costume.

As ratings dwindle, it has become harder for the program to attract celebrity contenders. During the first few seasons, contestants were somewhat recognizable, including rapper T-Pain, Cheetah Girls star Adrienne Bailon, American Idol winner Chris Daughtry, and teen heartthrobs Jesse McCartney and Nick Carter. In seasons five, six, and seven, the biggest stars included Jojo and Jewel.

The cast is unpredictable, and with smaller celebrities signing up, the pool is immense - leaving much to the imagination. What viewers can count on are the hosts: Nick Cannon, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger. All are returning for the new season.

How to watch

Viewers hoping to tune in can view the season premiere on FOX or through a streaming service like Fubo TV. Additionally, after airing live, a recording will be posted on Hulu, where it can be accessed whenever
