The popular dog breed on the edge of extinction

Several iconic dog breeds are at risk of disappearing altogether with registration numbers trending downward and demand plummeting. There are many reasons why this happening - but in the case of some breeds, it’s a question of marketing - some people simply don’t know they exist, or opt for more well-known and popular breeds.

According to Forbes, the five most popular breeds in the United States in 2024 were, in order: French Bulldog, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd and Poodle.

Belgian Laekenois numbers in decline

So where does that leave other breeds which are considered ‘less fashionable’ such as the Belgian Laekenois? (pronounced lak-in-wah).

The Belgian Laekenois is one of the four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd. Traditionally bred as herding dogs, they are highly intelligent, alert loyal and sensitive, and make excellent companions. They are also protective and make good guard dogs but at the same time, are usually affectionate and unaggressive when around children.

Modern Dog magazine is keen to boost the Belgian Laekenois' profile: “The American Kennel Club granted the Laekenois full AKC recognition and competition eligibility in 2020. The Laekenois are known for their curly, wire-haired coat that varies from fawn to mahogany in colour. Originating in the Belgian town of Laeken, they are the rarest of the four breeds. Sadly their numbers dropped after serving as messenger dogs in both World Wars. The Laekenois is so rare, in fact, it is estimated there are only about 1,000 in the world!"

Loyal watchdogs

Belgian Laekenois are fun, cute and smart - they’ve got it all, beauty, brains, and brawn - all the attributes you might look for when choosing a pet.

Unfortunately, most people don’t know about them. Secondly, they are not so easy to find - there are not many reputable breeders about, so quite a bit of homework will be involved to find a puppy. It’ll be worth all the effort, and you will be helping to save a rare breed from disappearing forever.
