The Santa Cruz pier collapses due to the level 1 storm, what happened?
A pier in Santa Cruz collapsed due to dangerous conditions. Here are the events as they unfolded in the coastal town.
This week, California has been drenched by relentless rain, particularly impacting the coastal city of Santa Cruz, which experienced a Level 1 storm that wreaked havoc on local infrastructure. Waves as high as 26 feet were seen in the area, highlighting the scale of the oceanic event.
In a dramatic turn of events, one of the city’s piers succumbed to the conditions, collapsing into the cold waters of the Pacific. Much of the pier had been closed to the public as it was under construction due to damage endured last winter.
The dangerous tide leads to a dramatic rescue
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the collapse did send at least three individuals into the water. Thankfully, these three were rescued safely, adding to the earlier efforts of first responders who had saved another three individuals from the dangerous tide that had impacted the area over the last twenty-four hours.
The storm and the impact on the pier are a sign of the times for the California city and a reminder of the need to increase investment in infrastructure to avoid these types of incidents. Though no one was hurt during today’s saga, the dangers are clear from the images circulating on social media.
