Update:
The mangosteen is a purple fruit typical of Asia that is made up mostly of water and this superfood helps regulate cholesterol and protects against viruses.

If you cut it in half it looks like a cotton ball inside a purple shell. Such is the mangosteen, or fruit of the garcinia mangostana, which, given its pleasant appearance with its rounded and fluffy leaves, could be mistaken for a toy.

This fruit, typical of the island countries of Asia, is full of properties that are good for the body and that make it one of the most complete superfoods, especially if you want to maintain young and radiant skin.

Due to its presence in the most populous nation in the world, it is also called Indian jobo and in its adult stage, the tree can produce more than 1,500 fruits. Despite being characteristic of the Indian Ocean, it can also be found in Latin American countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and Honduras.

Properties

  • Slimming down. This fruit only has 73 kcal per 100 grams due to its high percentage of water, making it ideal for those who are following diets to lose weight.
  • Satisfying. It is not necessary to take too much mangosteen to feel full. The pulp of this fruit is composed of a high level of HCA (hydroxycritric acid) that favors its satiating power.
  • Made of water. More than three-quarters of mangosteens are water, more specifically 80.69%, therefore, by taking this superfood we would also be hydrating.
  • Regulates cholesterol. Due to the high concentration of HCA it also helps prevent cholesterol in the blood and prevents the creation of fat.
  • Regulates bacteria and fungi. This fruit contains 84 types of xanthones, making this superfood a shield against bacteria, viruses and parasites.
  • Antioxidant. In the mangosteen, it also manages to stand up to free radicals, a chemical species that is behind the aging of the skin, as well as having potassium, which helps to reinvigorate muscles.

How to consume mangosteen

To eat this fruit it is advisable to cut it in two with a knife. At first it has a sweet and sour taste that gives rise to new sensations on the palate.

It can be eaten on its own, but, like all fruits, it can also be added to salads, made into sorbets or cakes, or prepared as a jam.
