The way you show affection to your dog that vets say you should stop
Animal behaviorists have studied when are the best times to cuddle your pet dog and when it’s best to leave them alone.

Dogs love nothing more than being showered with affection by their owners. They look forward to a good pat down or cuddle - and it shows. Some will invite you to rub their tummy, or snuggle up close for a tickle. It’s also a great way to bond with your pet and show friendship and affection. Plus it’s great fun as well as relaxing for both of you.
But there are moments when it’s not advisable to snuggle up with your dog (by the way, some simply might not like close contact with humans, due to their breed, character or genetic makeup - it’s nothing personal).

When do dogs not like to be cuddled?
Animal behaviorists claim that there are certain moments when you you should not make physical contact with your pet pooch.
When dogs are resting or sleeping, it’s best to leave them be. While it may be tempting to pet them or give them a cuddle while they are snoozing, might disturb and upset them.
It’s not a good idea to catch your dog off-guard as you will startle them. Margaret M. Duxbury, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist and co-owner of based Veterinary Behavior Specialties in Minneapolis, explains why. “They hate it! It’s not fair. If possible, let a sleeping dog lie”.
Dogs can become surprised or agitated when we sneak up on them - especially when they’re asleep, playing with their toys, or enjoying a snack. It’s easy to tell when they are uncomfortable. Some may growl or snap, others may scamper off to hide. So it’s important not to encroach on their space while they are catching up on some rest.
On the flip side, there are signs when you dog is enjoying a bit of close physical contact. They might swish their tail, or pant.
So enjoy the moments when your dog comes over for a cuddle. But remember that not every dog enjoys them, but that’s okay, they will show you that they love you in other ways.
