Multiple airlines have announced flight cancellations across the Middle East following attacks by United States and Israel on Iran.

Several airlines continue to cancel flights throughout the region after the strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, along with retaliatory attacks by Iran against Gulf states. The escalation caused large portions of regional airspace to remain closed over the weekend.

As of Monday, airspace over Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar remains largely empty, disrupting thousands of flights and leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

Airlines that have canceled flights to the Middle East

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are among the airlines that have canceled flights. Emirates also suspended operations to and from Dubai, while Etihad Airways halted flights from Abu Dhabi. Qatar Airways also suspended its operations.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and have cancelled a number of flights to the Middle East. We have a flexible booking policy in place for flights to Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, and Tel Aviv. Customers due to travel to these destinations can find more details and make changes to their booking by visiting ba.com. We would ask customers not traveling within the next 48 hours to avoid calling our contact centers, as they are extremely busy and we need to ensure we prioritize customers who are currently in affected destinations,” British Airways said in a statement on Sunday.

Other airlines that announced cancellations include Air India, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Aegean Airlines, Air Astana, Air Canada, Air Europa, Azerbaijan Airlines, Flydubai, IndiGo, ITA Airways, KLM, LOT Polish Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Pegasus Airlines, and Wizz Air.

Among U.S. carriers, Delta Air Lines suspended flights between New York City and Tel Aviv through March 8. American Airlines temporarily suspended flights between Doha and Philadelphia, while United Airlines canceled flights to Tel Aviv through March 6 and flights to Dubai through March 4.

Although airlines and the region have become accustomed to travel disruptions in recent years, this extended closure of more than 24 hours is unprecedented. It will also require significant operational adjustments once airspace reopens.

According to the flight tracking platform FlightAware, there are currently over 8,900 delays and 2,100 cancellations worldwide.
