When coins are made in the US, the majority of them bear a mark of the mint in which they are created- letters that identify where the coin comes from. These identifiers are a way to hold the makers accountable for the coin’s quality.

For example, coins from the Philadelphia Mint bear the letter P, San Francisco the letter S, the New Orleans Mint the letter O, and the West Point Mint in New York the letter W.

One dime that could bring you thousands of dollars was crafted at the Philadelphia Mint in 1982. What makes it special is that it does not have the mint mark- the letter P. According to Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) price guide editor Jaime Hernandez, the mint released around 150,000 of these “P-less” coins.

A lot of these special dimes were first noticed around the area of Sandusky, Ohio. The highest price that a “No-P” coin has netted so far has been $2,185 through Heritage Auctions- a price tag that makes it worth your while to scrutinize your spare change. If you find a 1982 Roosevelt coin with no P, you might have hit the jackpot.
