Year after year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) publishes a list of the most popular names of the year in the United States. The collection is possible thanks to the fact that the government agency has access to the country’s birth certificates.

According to Sophie Kihm, editor-in-chief of the baby name website Nameberry, the list is unlikely to change much from year to year. However, in 2023, it witnessed an unusual shake-up: a Latin name managed to leap on to the list of the most popular names, marking a milestone in the country by reflecting a increase in the inclusion of Latino culture.

According to the latest update from the SSA, corresponding to the year 2023, the Latin name that entered the list of most popular names in the USA is Mateo, coming in at the sixth position with a total of 11,229 records. With this, Benjamin’s name is out of the Top 10 and moves to eleventh position, the ranking Mateo previously held.

“It’s pretty much the first identifiably Latino name, too, at least on the boys’ side,” Kihm explained to CNN. On the contrary, for the female gender American names predominate. However, the trend suggests that the Latin influence could change the makeup of the top in the coming years. Among the Hispanic girl names that stand out on the list are Luna, in tenth position, and Sofía, in 12th.
