The Social Security Administration has released its payment schedule for next year. Benefits are sent out to retired workers, as well as adults and children with disabilities who fall into the Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance categories.

The exact amount varies depending on the beneficiary’s personal situation. However, the agency has official estimates that provide a clearer picture for payment recipients.

The amount received increases each year thanks to the Cost of Living Adjustment or COLA, which seeks to match benefits to current inflation. This helps avoid loss of purchasing power when inflation is high.

Here’s how Social Security payments will be for 2025

In 2025, the COLA increase will be 2.5% and will benefit more than 70 million recipients. This will bring the average payments for next year to the following levels, according to SSA estimates:

  • Retired workers: $1,927 to $1,976
  • Couples where both receive benefits: $3,014 to $3,089
  • Widowed mother and two children: $3,669 to $3,761
  • Senior citizen widow(er): $1,788 to $1,832
  • Disabled worker, spouse and one or more children: $2,757 to $2,826
  • Disabled workers: $1,542 to $1,580

Social Security payments are made on a monthly basis. The exact date depends on the recipient’s birth date.

Those born between the 1st and 10th receive the money on the second Wednesday of the month. Those born between the 11th and 20th get the money on the third Wednesday, and those born between the 21st and 31st can expect their check on the fourth Wednesday.

Workers who retired before May 1997 and SSI recipients are not covered by the above scheme, as they receive their money during the first day of the month, regardless of their date of birth.

If a payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, the money is sent in advance, which can sometimes result in two payments in one month.

These are the months in which the Social Security Administration will issue two payments in 2025:

  • May: 1 and 30, since June 1 falls on a Sunday
  • August: 1 and 29, since September 1 is a holiday (Labor Day)
  • October: 1 and 31, since November 1 falls on a Saturday
  • December: 1 and 31, since January 1 is New Year's Day
