Every Wednesday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues a new batch of checks for the program’s recipients. The SSA distributes 70 million payments monthly to its beneficiaries, who range from retired workers to people with some type of disability who benefit from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The issuance of payments depends on the date of birth of the beneficiaries, while the exact amount is linked to various factors. In the case of retirees, the SSA considers the years worked, the salary received and the taxes paid to Insurance during their working life. The age at which the beneficiary requests retirement is also a factor.

According to official figures, the average payment for a retired worker in 2024 is $1,907 per month, while couples who file jointly can receive an average monthly check of $3,303.

As for SSI beneficiaries, the SSA estimates that the average payment is $943 per month for an individual and $1,415 for couples. Individuals who receive SSDI get an approximate monthly amount of $1,537 and $2,720 for couples.

How payment distribution works

Retired workers who were born between the 1st and 10th receive the money on the second Wednesday of the month. Those with a birth date between the 11th and 20th do so on the third Wednesday, and those from the 21st to the 31st do so on the last Wednesday.

Individuals who retired before May 1997 and disability beneficiaries do not fall into the previous scheme, since they receive the payment during the first day of the month, regardless of date of birth.
