The arrest of Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the shocking murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has brought unexpected attention to his family’s extensive business empire.
The Mangione family, known for their affluence and influence in the Baltimore area, has a diverse portfolio of ventures that spans multiple industries. The heart of this is their significant numver of real estate assets.
The Mangione family business
The family’s prominence in this sector began in the 1970s when Luigi’s grandparents, Nick Mangione Sr. and Mary C. Mangione, acquired the Turf Valley country club in Ellicott City. The Turf Valley Resort, now a sprawling luxury retreat and conference center, has become a cornerstone of the family’s holdings.
In the 1980s, the family expanded their country club ownership by purchasing Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
The family’s influence extends into the political sphere. Luigi’s cousin, Nino Mangione, serves as an elected official in the Maryland House of Delegates.
“Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione. We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved,” the family said in a statement. “We are devastated by this news.”
Ironically, given the nature of the crime Luigi is accused of, the Mangione family has significant interests in the healthcare sector. They founded Lorien Health Services, a nursing home company where Luigi’s father, Louis Mangione, became an owner Nick started it.
