SOCIAL SECURITY

These beneficiaries will receive two Social Security payments in August, November and December

In August, November and December, some Social Security beneficiaries will receive two payments, one at the beginning and one at the end of each month.

Month after month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends money to millions of people. Beneficiaries include retired workers, survivors, and those who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.

Generally, one check or deposit is disbursed each month, but sometimes two payments are sent in the same month. This case applies to those who receive SSI payments which typically are sent at the beginning of the month, but sometimes their monthly payment comes at the end of the previous month to which it corresponds.

Months when double Social Security payments will be sent

According to the SSA payment schedule, SSI benefits are sent on the first day of each month. However, if the first day is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, payments are moved forward to the first business day before the first of the month to which the payment corresponds. This results in two payments in one month. This happened in May and will happen again in August, November and December.

The first SSI payment of the month of August will be sent on the first. On the other hand, because September 1 is a Sunday, the sending of said month’s SSI payment will advance to Friday, August 30.

The first SSI payment of the month of November will be sent on the first. On the other hand, because December 1 is a Sunday, the sending of said month’s SSI payment will advance to Friday, November 29.

On December 1, the first SSI payment of the month will be sent as usual. On the other hand, because January 1, 2025 is a holiday, the sending of the payment for said month of the SSI moves forward to Tuesday, December 31.

How much money is sent from Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

Social Security payments are adjusted annually through the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), which aims to match payments with inflation. In 2024, COLA increased payments by 3.2%. This year, the maximum Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit rose to $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples.

For January 2025 payments, advanced in December, the maximum amount will be different due to the cost of living adjustment (COLA) which will be announced in October.

SSI payments are sent via direct deposit to beneficiaries who have provided a bank account to SSA, which is now federally mandated since 2013, or via mail in a check, which takes longer to process and arrive. The Social Security Administration recommends that those who still receive their benefits in the mail sign up for direct deposit either at their local office or using my Social Security account.
