These people can get their driver's license for free in Texas
Some Texas residents can acquire a driver’s license for free, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Find out if you are among those qualified.
Millions of people drive around the streets of Texas every day, and just like many other Americans, having a driver’s license is an absolute must for residents who need to get around the second-largest U.S. state.
In the Lone Star State, the price of this form of identification varies depending on age.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the cost of a driver’s license for those under 18 is $16. This permit expires once you turn 18. After that, the cost increases to $33. The permit must be renewed every eight years, and this price remains the same until you reach the age of age 84. For those over 84, the cost is $9 and the document is valid for two years.
However, there are certain citizens who can obtain their driving license for free, if they belong to a particular sector of the population.

Who can get their driver’s license for free in Texas?
Through a waiver approved by the Department of Public Safety, veterans with service-connected disabilities can obtain a driver’s license for free, provided they meet certain requirements.
This includes an honorable discharge after completion of service, a certified disability that causes 60% of physical or mental impairment due to their service in the military, and necessary documentation showing disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The measure only applies to personal licenses and Real ID licenses issued by DPS, which completely excludes commercial licenses. Once the application is approved, recipients will obtain a driver’s license under the designation of “VETERAN” or “DISABLED VETERAN.” In this way, the state seeks to recognize the sacrifice of this group of people.
If you meet the eligibility criteria and wish to apply for a free driver’s license, you may submit the appropriate documentation (proof of honorable discharge, disability certification, and proof of compensation) at any DPS office.
