Each month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes millions of payments to its program beneficiaries. Most of these payments go to retirees and those who are eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

To maintain a clear and efficient organization, SSA issues payments based on recipients’ birth dates. Those born between the 1st and 10th of any month receive the money on the second Wednesday of the month; those born between the 11th and 20th get it on the third Wednesday; and those born between the 21st and 31st get it on the last Wednesday.

According to the SSA distribution calendar and estimates table, retirees born between the 11th and 20th of the month will receive an average payment of $1,900. With this, there is only one payment remaining for the current month of September:

  • Wednesday, 25th: Beneficiaries with date of birth between the 21st and the 31st

Please note that these figures are approximate. The exact amount of each payment depends on several factors, including years worked, Social Security contributions, and retirement age, among others. For more information, visit the SSA’s official website.

Workers who retired before May 1997 and SSI recipients do not follow this payment schedule. Instead, SSA issues their checks or makes the deposit, as appropriate, on the first day of the month, regardless of birth date.

How much will I receive from Social Security?

The amount of Social Security payments varies depending on each beneficiary's retirement history, but the SSA provides estimates that allow people to plan ahead for retirement.

For 2024, the average payment for an individual retiree is $1,907 per month. Retired couples filing jointly can receive about $3,303 per month. SSI recipients, meanwhile, get an average payment of $943 per month for individuals and $1,415 for couples.

Each year, these payments are adjusted according to the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), which is a measure designed to offset the impact of inflation on the amount of the checks. In 2024, the increase to the COLA was 3.2%, while the adjustment for 2025 will be announced in mid-October.
