Thirteen years later, a message in a bottle thrown by a couple was found 2,000 miles away
After more than a decade, the bottle made its way from the Canadian coast to Ireland, to the disbelief of everyone involved.

When Brad Squires and Anita Moran launched an empty bottle of wine with a handwritten message inside into the Atlantic Ocean off Newfoundland and Labrador’s Bell Island 13 years ago, they would’ve been hoping it would wash up somewhere far-fetched years later, although they certainly wouldn’t have expected it.
However, that’s exactly how things panned out, with the bottle making it all the way to the other side of the pond, where it was found around 2,000 miles away off the coast of Maharees in southwest Ireland this week.
What did the message say?
“Today we enjoyed dinner, this bottle of wine and each other on the edge of the island,” states the message, seemingly written by Moran. “If you find this, please call us.”
A call to the cell phone number provided never came, but the bottle’s Irish finders were able to track the couple down on social media to share the unexpected news.
“We didn’t think it would make it to the water”
Speaking to NBC News, Anita could hardly contain her disbelief at the discovery.
“We thought it wasn’t even going to make it to the water, let alone bypass all the rocks and make it across the ocean and be found. For all the stars to align, for all those things to happen, it seems like an impossible feat for that little bottle, but it was pretty resilient.”
At the time, Squires and Moran had been dating for a year and were in a long-distance relationship. He was working as a police officer in British Columbia, while she was a trainee nurse in Newfoundland, approximately 3,000 miles away.
Thirteen years later, the couple are still together, got married and have three children…as well as a fascinating story to anyone who’ll listen.
